He believes that we are in transition to the last of the seven layers of maturity of being human beings and that we will only be able to build the lives, relationships, and organizations that reflect the higher layers when we elder ourselves up to the higher layers. Therefore, the first half of the book describes the seven layers of maturity and how to elder one’s self up them in the natural progression to the highest layer. The second half of the book describes what he believes will be the structure of corporations, democracies, nations, and personal communities that will reflect the highest layers. Terry believes that once we know a more mature truth in our experiences we can't ever fool ourselves into believing we do not know it. It will then naturally, automatically, and effortlessly become a skill, then a habit, and then part of who we are without having to think about it anymore. He believes that when people discover the experience of the highest layer of maturity through doing the “love skill exercise,” as he calls it, this natural process of it becoming a habit will begin to occur.
